Mailspect Archive Adds OpenOffice Document Support

Full-Text Indexing of Archived OpenOffice Attachments Available

In response to customer demand, Mailspect has released an upgrade of Mailspect Archive that provides full-text indexing of OpenOffice documents attached to email.  Mailspect researched, programmed and tested this upgrade in a three-week development cycle leveraging its growing global development community.  OpenOffice continues to be the leading alternative to commercial office automation applications such as Microsoft Office and Google Apps.   In July, it was voted best 2009 Government Open Source application at the Fourth Annual Sourceforge Community Choice Awards.  The MPP Archive update is available at:

Open Source software is being adopted by governments all over the world at an accelerating pace.  The Center for Strategic and International Studies’ Sixth Annual Open Source Policies Survey, released in July 2008, documents 275 Open Source policy initiatives being pursued by governments around the world.

“OpenOffice is an important component of the Open Source movement because it is generally part of  ‘an open file format’ initiative aimed at freeing users from vendor lock-in on the desktop.  In some government markets such as Hungary and the Netherlands, analysts estimate that OpenOffice has achieved market penetration of more than 12%.   This market share shift has resulted in a critical mass of users requiring full-text indexing of OpenOffice documents in their email archiving solution.”, said Paul Sterne, Chief Marketing Officer, Mailspect Inc.

“The global economic crisis has caused governments and enterprises to re-evaluate their IT investments and more and more organizations are deciding for open solutions like OpenOffice.  Mailspect has been serving the Open Source segment of the email and groupware market for years with products that defend, archive and manage the enterprise email stream.  The decision to add OpenOffice document support to Mailspect Archive was based solely on customer demand as more and more organizations make OpenOffice a key element of their RFP’s.” said Mike Katz, CEO, Mailspect Inc.
